Happiness Project 18

4 Comments

I enjoy writing The Happy Things Project blogs. Each week I try to post 3 things that create happiness in my eternal Now. There will be apparent repetition but Now brings new and unique happinesses even to what seems old.

1.  The Rougarou
Scooby Doo save me from the Rougarou.
Watch out for those southern Louisiana swamp monsters when you’re out swamp fishing at night.

2.  A New Mantra
My freedom is more important than your anger.
This was inspied by:
“‘no’ might make them angry but it will make you free.
— if no one has ever told you,
your freedom is more important than their anger.” ~ Nayyirah Waheed

3.  Pot Likker
My father taught me to love pot liquor.  He grinned and proclaimed loudly how delicious it tasted.
“Pot liquor, sometimes spelled potlikker[1] or pot likker[2] is the liquid that is left behind after boiling greens (collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens) or beans. It is sometimes seasoned with salt and pepper, smoked pork or smoked turkey.” – Wikipedia
I recently cooked a batch of black beans.  😋 THE POT LIKKER WAS DELICIOUS!!!!!!

1.  Riding the RTA
I purchased a $3 Jazzy Pass and rode the buses and streetcars all around New Orleans.  I saw places and things I would have never seen otherwise. It was great fun.

 Jazzy Passes
1-day, 3-day and 31-day Jazzy Passes are available in a magnetic card format, as well as on the RTA’s GoMobile app. Jazzy Passes are valid for an unlimited number of trips for the time purchased. They are valid on the RTA buses & streetcars only and are non-transferable. They are activated with the first use. Please note that RTA also offers a 5-day Jazzy Pass which is only available via the GoMobile app or at an RTA Ticket Vending Machine (TVM).  From the NORTA website.

2.  Role – a poem by J.E. Glaze
I swallowed the universe.
I spit it out upon dry land.
It crawled up the shore,
arose and walked away,
forever changed.

3.  Swamps and bayous
I went on a Pearl River Eco-tour of Honey Island Swamp.

I had a great time and the tour guide was informative and obviously knew what he was talking about.  The tour was much more than just seeing alligators.  We did see some and also some wild hogs.  Those were the biggies.

There are a couple of wild hogs in there. Up close with the swamp plants
It was a narrow passage they were brushing both sides of the boat.

What’s Happening in June

2 Comments

What’s going on at World HQ this month?
1. Lots of service work:
* Air conditioner service
* Refrigerator service
* Engine oil and filter change
* Onan propane generator oil and filter change
* Chassis lube
* Gas filter replaced
* Check brakes, shocks, steering stabilizer, and air dryer
* New radio
* Check house batteries
* Fix steps
* Maybe a new TV 📺
The one in the bedroom has been broken for a while now.

2. Gunter Hill Campground
This is one of my favorite campgrounds. It’s in the River Region of Alabama just outside Montgomery. Most the lots are wooded. As an added bonus, since it’s a COE campground I can stay for half price.

3. Back in Alabama – sigh

4. Visiting with some good friends and family

5. A beginner kayak?
I have been shopping for a kayak. I’ve looked at inflatables, kayaks that come in sections, regular kayaks, one person, two person, sit on, sit in, life vests, paddles, and a multitude of ways to carry a kayak with a soft top Jeep or motorhome.
I was hobbling around Gunter Hill and there was the 8′ DayLife sit on kayak. The reviews indicate it is a good beginner’s kayak.  Any suggestions?

Checkup

5 Comments

I got to FourStar Freightliner in Montgomery at 8am.  Right on time. After filling out paperwork, I went to the customer lounge.   An hour passed before my rolling home rolled into the shop area. The time passed quickly because the conversation was  excellent.   I spent several hours talking with a truck driver from Atlanta.  Tim is an interesting human and very knowledgeable.  Our conversation centered around comparative religion.  I learned at lot.   Very enjoyable.   That is one of my favorite subjects.

The diagnosis is good news. The brakes, shocks, and air dryer look good.  He said the brakes and shocks look new.  I also asked them to do a general over all check of my  rolling home.  They found an oil leak on the oil pan and tightened the bolts.  I’ll watch and see if that worked.  All I’m getting done today is engine service, generator  service, and a gas filter.

Six+/- hours later, the total was $420 and change for the services and gas filter.   Not bad at all.   I highly recommend Four Star Freightliner in Montgomery Alabama. I’m already planning to return to have the transmission and AC serviced.

No tent is required. I’m parked in my rolling home at Gunter Hill Campground.  YAY!

A Short Hop

8 Comments

I visited FourStar Freightliner in Montgomery AL to set up an appointment for service work. The fast and friendly service man said bring the RV in at 8 in the morning (6.1.17).  I’ll be there.  At 13 minutes away, it’s probably not going to get any more convenient.

They’ll take a look at the air dryer, brakes, shocks, and air filters to determine what if anything needs repair.  We know they will find something.  That’s their business. Then they will check parts availability, order parts, and set up a time for me to to return for the repairs.

He said it would probably have to stay overnight one night and that it should be done before my travel date (6.12.17). I’ll find a local motel or get a tent. I lean towards the tent plan.  A tent is a good thing to own.  After all, I might want to go camping some time.  😂

Stay tuned for the next episode!

Adventures in Nomading

2 Comments

Two travel days in a row is tiring. But there is no rest for the weary traveler.   Another new nomadic lifestyle experience/adventure is in the making.

Tomorrow an RV Hero is coming to service the AC units. This will be the first time they have been serviced since I’ve had the RV. The next day I’m going to visit the local Freightliner dealership. Maybe I can get an appointment. I want the brakes, the air dryer. and shocks checked.

It is hard to set up house when the house may roll in to the shop for an unknown period of time. And there is the food in the fridge. And few as they are, all my things are in my rolling home. It is an exciting week.

Happiness Project #15

8 Comments

The Happy Things Project continues.  Each week I try to post 3 things that create happiness in my eternal Now. There will be apparent repetition but Now brings new and unique happinesses even to what seems old.
1.  The French Quarter
is a place that never lets me down when I’m out doing street photography.  From the people to the architecture there is always something to photograph.

2.  Making it my own
I have been living in this RV for over two years and I’m finally beginning to make it my own.  Interior decorating has never been one of my strengths.
I know it isn’t much, but I’ve replaced the factory comforter with mandala patterned bedding.  I’m very excited about it.
3.  Travel Days
They used to terrify me.  Now I look forward to them.   Changing locations, seeing new things, meeting new friends, and visiting with old friends…yes, I like travel days.  Today is a travel day.  I’ll be moving from Atmore, AL to Montgomery, AL.
